Three large shipped lots of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate from May 21, 2012 on, have been recalled and are likely the cause of the deadly outbreak of rare fungal meningitis.
This outbreak of a rare and deadly form of meningitis was first detected among patients treated at the Saint Thomas Outpatient Neurosurgery Center. Symptoms of Meningitis include fever, headache, nausea and neurological problems.
The Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned the public and doctors not to use any products manufactured by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, MA due to an outbreak of fungal meningitis.
