Adderall XR is a once daily extended-release, single-entity amphetamine product.  It is a salts-based medication used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. 

Shire Pharmaceuticals manufactures the brand name Adderall XR and is under contract to provide the generic form of the drug to Teva Pharmaceuticals and Impax Laboratories, which mass produces the generic version of Adderall XR.  Since early 2011, there have been numerous published reports that the generic version of Adderall XR has been unavailable to consumers in the United States.  This has forced consumers to purchase the vastly more expensive brand name Adderall XR, rather than its generic equivalent.
